The City of Elgin invited The Larkin Center again this summer to partner for Movies in the Park at Festival Park. Staff and community volunteers ran the concession stand. Our major sponsor this year was Meijer of Elgin who provided us a $300 gift card to purchase all of the items we sold at the movie. Costco from Lake in the Hills also donated $50 in gift cards and we partnered with owner, Steve Gordon from Dairy Queen in Elgin. Steve dropped off a number of items for us to sell at the park with the agreement that we would split the proceeds of what we sold. Steve decided that he wanted to donate all of the proceeds back to Larkin. We raised $961.24 this year and all of the proceeds will be going towards school supplies for our clients.
The Northern Kane County Chamber of Commerce (NKCC) partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley for a “Build Day” on a house project in Carpentersville. The Chamber invited chamber members to participate and be a part of transforming a rundown house into a beautiful home for a very deserving family. The development team saw this as a great opportunity to help out a nonprofit neighbor. We were given the opportunity to speak about The Larkin Center to the group. We were able to connect with volunteers, staff from Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley, and the Courier News. Melissa Hernandez, President of NKCC, offered to plan a volunteer day for chamber members to be involved in a project at Larkin.
The Larkin Center, along with other Elgin nonprofits, participated in this year’s Art & Soul on the Fox held in downtown Elgin. Each nonprofit was given a 2 hour slot to showcase their organization in the nonprofit tent. The Larkin Center was accompanied by representatives from NISRA, CASA, and Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley.
